The right to self defence, enshrined in the law was a right that was constantly appealed to by the Youth Movements who defended individuals from police criminalisation and racism. In 1981, the United Black Youth League campaigned successfully to defend an African Caribbean bouncer who was charged with the assault of a police officer.
